Safety in Shanghai

Metropolitan Living

When your child leave the US to travel abroad, the primary concern is for the physical safety and welfare of your child. ThinkChina takes these concerns seriously, and is thrilled that your son or daughter has decided to come to China with us. Shanghai is a very safe city to live in, and compared to similarly-sized Western metropolises such as New York or London, the crime rate is extremely low. Apart from some more popular foreigner targeted nightclub areas, most parts of Shanghai are very safe to walk around even late at night.

Protocols in Place

While unlike most Western countries, violent crime is rare in China. Despite this fact, we firmly believe that one should be aware of his or her surroundings in any situation - especially in new environments. The biggest issues of concern in Shanghai for students are pick-pocketing thieves and money-making scams. During orientation, students will learn safety tips and precautions when traveling around Shanghai. ThinkChina provides unique identification badges and individual ThinkChina mobile phones to maximize safety for our students. Twenty-four hour security in residences, full time staff supervision, practice subway runs to familiarize students with the Shanghai public transportations are just a few of the many safety precautions we take.

Communication

While students would want to experience the full range of entertainment options available to them during their leisure time, student cooperation and informed decision-making will allow ThinkChina to more effectively guarantee student’s safety and well-being. A staff member will always be on duty, and a Program Director can be reached by mobile phone in the event of an emergency while your child is living in Shanghai.
